In response to the CORONA-19 virus, Rose City Cemetery & Funeral Home offices are closed, except by appointment. Cremations and burials will continue as scheduled, with only cemetery staff present. Families are welcome to visit the grave site after the burial is complete. Phones are being answered as usual (503-281-3821) and the cemetery grounds and outdoor mausoleum are open normal hours during this time. 
We are working hard to continue providing excellent service with as little disruption as possible. Thanks to all of you who have been so flexible already.

Green Burial & "Aquamation"

Green burial is an ecologically-friendly option for traditional services including formaldehyde-free “ecobalming”, and viewing without embalming. 

Rose City is certified by the Green Burial Council and is one of a few cemeteries in the Portland area which allows Green Burial in any grave in our cemetery. 

Green Burial typically refers to burial involving no formaldehyde, no casket and no concrete vault. There is no additional cost for choosing Green Burial at Rose City, in fact depending on your choices, sustainable burial may be less expensive than traditional vault interment.

Alkaline Hydrolysis is an eco-friendly alternative to flame cremation and traditional burial. 

This process uses water at a high temperature, and alkalinity to accelerate natural decomposition. It goes by many names such as aquamation, bio-cremation, or resomation, the final product from alkaline hydrolysis is comparable to traditional cremated remains. 

Since alkaline hydrolysis is reductive, the body will go through the same breakdown process as it would in soil, but in a matter of hours rather than over a long period of time. 

Furthermore, choosing alkaline hydrolysis will not limit the memorial options available.
