Obituary

Viola Medd passed away on February 14, 2022.  Viola was born in rural Valley City, North Dakota on October 25, 1919.  She was the sixth child of the late Anthony and Lena (Larson) Syvertson.  Viola attended Skandia Dist. 40 Elementary School, and Hastings and Valley City High Schools.  After high school she attended Valley City State University and taught grammar school in Ellendale, ND.

While attending a July 1943 dance in Rogers, North Dakota, she met Glenn Medd and romance blossomed.  They married in June 1945 and settled in Karnak, ND.  In 1955 Viola, Glenn and daughters Gloria and Jeanne moved to Portland, Oregon where a third daughter, Debra, was born.

Viola later worked at Montgomery Wards and at the Fabric House in Portland, OR.  Viola was a loving wife and mother and enjoyed being with her girls.  She was also an excellent seamstress and throughout her life made clothes and household items for her family and others.  She was an avid Portland Trailblazer fan and cheered for them on TV.  She rallied the girls to take her to the casino and loved getting lottery Scratch-its!  She was also a member of the Montavilla Methodist Church.

Viola is predeceased by her husband Glenn Medd.  She is also predeceased by her sisters and brother:   Elizabeth Bouck, Sylvia Fogderud, Lillian Jorgensen, Ruth Haugen, Ervin Syvertson and Irene Haugen.  She is survived by her sister Inez Hopewell of Lakeside, CA and also by Viola’s children Gloria Becker (Bill) of Portland, OR, Jeanne Dunlap (Jim) of Washougal, WA and Debra Bergstrom (Michael) of Portland, OR.  She is also survived by her grandchildren Kimberly Stacy and Todd Westfall, and great-grandchildren, Jordan Foy, Blake Foy, Isabella Westfall and Tayler Westfall.

A heartfelt thank you to family members and friends who visited with mom over the years.  We are also so grateful to mom’s caregivers Dorothy, Langiake and Amy who helped to care for her.

A celebration of Viola’s life is planned for later this year.
