John Eldredge “Skip” Angus, aged 91, passed November 5, 2023 in Vancouver Washington. He was born in Portland in 1932 to Eldredge Angus and Ethel (Pascall) Angus. When his parents brought John home from the hospital, his big brother Neal, whose birthday was the day after John’s, asked if this was the ‘skippy doll’ he had been asking for. The nickname Skip stuck for a lifetime.
John was a paperboy, a bellhop, a federal government night clerk, a Portland Firefighter, and occasionally moonlighted as a Longshoreman. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1950, and the University of Portland in 1956. John married Merriam Lucille Jones in 1953, an artist born in Condon, Oregon. They had three children before her unexpected passing in 1960. As a widower, John raised all his children, preserving their family unit.
John earned his private pilot’s license in 1961, and he also enjoyed model airplanes, motorcycles, go-carts, ATV’s, camping, impromptu drives, ballroom and square dancing, and perfecting recipes for chili and paper bag roasted turkey, often with his kids' participation.
He was predeceased by his wife Merriam, his sister Arla (Angus) Lawler, both parents, long-term partner Doris Hansen, and his brother Robert Neal. His survivors are two daughters, a son, two grandsons, and three great grandchildren, all of the Portland area.
Family and friends are invited to the burial on Thursday November 16 at 2:30pm, followed by an informal reception from 3-5pm, at Rose City Cemetery, 5625 NE Fremont in Portland.
