Cheryl "Sherry" Lorraine Walterscheid

November 21, 1946 — March 1, 2023

Cheryl (Sherry) Lorraine Walterscheid, aged 76, died March 1, 2023, in Portland, of brain injuries sustained in a fall. Sherry was born in Los Angeles, November 21, 1946, the daughter of Richard C. and Lorraine F. Shipley. Her family moved to Ventura County north of Los Angles in the mid 50’s where she attended middle and high school, graduating from Hueneme High School in 1964. She attended the University of California, Santa Barbara, graduating in 1968 with a Batchelor’s degree in History. Shortly after graduation she moved to Wiesbaden, Germany to work as a secretary for a German Aerospace company. Her main motivation was travel. There she met her husband Richard, an officer in the US Air Force, in German class. They were married in November 1971 and shortly after returned to California. After a two-year stay in Berkeley, they moved to Los Angeles in 1974 where they remained until 2019, except for a four month stay in Adelaide, Australia and a four-year stay in Darmstadt, Germany, both stays abroad in connection with her husband’s work. In 2019 they moved to Portland where their daughter lived. Sherry had roots in Oregon. The Shipley’s arrived by the Oregon Trail, and she had relatives (mostly distant) belonging to the Henckel-Wyatt family group residing all over Oregon.

Their first child Jonn was born in 1977. The second child Amy was born in 1978.

Sherry taught English as a Second Language for a number of years in the Los Angeles and Culver City school systems. She was very active in the affairs of her children’s elementary school, serving in various capacities: as PTA president for two years and as lead for the school’s spring fair fundraiser for two years. Sherry was active in a profession sororal organization (Delta Kappa Gamma) whose main charitable activity was to provide toys and books for children in long-term hospital care.

For activities, her main loves were travel, Christmas and arts and crafts. She and her husband traveled extensively on the Continent visiting every country in western Europe. She visited every continent save Antarctica. Christmas was a two-month preoccupation. She loved decorating the house and dressing the Christmas tree with ornaments collected from various countries. Her arts and crafts hobby consisted mainly of crafting greeting cards for nearly every occasion.

She loved Germany. When she and her husband lived in Germany every day had an element of adventure and discovery for her. She loved the language, landscape, medieval towns and villages, local customs and holidays.

Above all she loved her family and friends. Sherry had a wonderful personality. Many loved her and were loved by her. She was open, honest, and genuine. She is survived by her husband Richard Walterscheid, son Jonn Walterscheid and daughter Amy Walterscheid. She is also survived by her brother- and sister-in-law William and Fran Walterscheid, brother-in-law Frank Walterscheid and sister-in-law Linda Walterscheid.

Sherry will always and forever be loved.
