Zachary John Marquez born and raised in Portland, OR, was a cowboy who found his calling
once he moved to Wyoming and discovered he had a way with horses and mules. Last year he
worked at Swan Mountain Outfitters as a back-country packer and guide and looked forward to
a return to infamy in April. While others would hardly call his canvas tent with no running water
paradise, Zach was thrilled to sleep practically under the stars every night.
A perennial hunter, he spent many seasons traipsing through Eastern Oregon. Took him nine
shots to bring it down, but he eventually got his elk.
When asked his favorite color, Zach would answer “Camo” which made buying him Christmas
presents rather easy.
Zach is a graduate of Columbia Christian School where he made everyone call him Marquez
because he wasn’t the only Zach. While his contributions academically were little of note, he is
remembered by many as that student who everyone thought was on the custodial staff. There
was not a person who shared a classroom with him who was not impacted by his humor and
memory making antics including signing up a classmate for Farmersonly.com.
Zach was an Eagle Scout of the Thunderbird BSA Troop 606 whose final project was the
fabrication and installation of 20 wood duck houses on Sauvie Island.
A frequent and avid country music listener, we were all grateful when “Red Solo Cup” was no
longer on steady rotation.
Wherever Zach went he left the odor of “eau de unwashed man” with a hint of Irish Spring.
Zach is preceded in death by his two good dogs Chase and Rudy and the squirrels who kept
eating his cookies. His family is too prodigious to mention here as we would exceed the
character limit but he was a beloved cousin, uncle, grandson, brother and son.
His horse Mardi Gras will probably miss him the most.
While his body may have been in Oregon, his heart never left the back woods of Montana.
