Richard Dean Hanke, fondly known as Dick, was born on September 8, 1943, in the vibrant city of Portland, Oregon, to Marie (Klaus) & Rudolph Hanke. Surrounded by the majestic backdrop of the Pacific Northwest, he infused his life with warmth and a generous spirit that would touch the hearts of many throughout his years.
For two decades, Dick poured his heart into the family business as a sanitary relocation expert. Working alongside his beloved brother Gary and his nephew Ken, he dedicated himself to the labor of collecting bins. His steadfast commitment and hard work not only exemplified his character but also laid a strong foundation for a family legacy that would be remembered fondly. Following the sale of the garbage route, Dick continued to contribute through his work in the local recycling plant.
Dick's personality radiated joy; he embraced life with an effervescent spirit. An aficionado of Bingo, he sought out every opportunity to play, frequently accompanying his parents and Gary on joyful trips to the lively city of Reno and to the inviting arcades at Seaside, Oregon. His exuberance for life was evident, and his laughter often filled the air in these cherished moments.
However, life presented its challenges; Dick faced the trials of frontal lobe dementia, a condition that dimmed his vibrant light in the latter years. Yet, his disposition remained remarkably bright, characterized by an enduring happiness that many witnessed until the heartbreaking news of his brother's passing, a loss that took its toll on Dick's spirit. Despite the struggles, he approached every day with generous kindness, sharing his warmth with family and friends alike, including a fondness for Cocker Spaniels that mirrored the affection he held for all beings.
On May 31, 2025, in the city he lovingly called home, Richard Dean Hanke passed away quietly, surrounded by the comfort of familiarity. A funeral service will be held at the Rose City Cemetery and Funeral Home in Portland, Oregon, on June 13, 2025, starting at 11:00 AM, followed by a graveside service at 12:00 PM. His life, though now concluded, will echo in the hearts of those who knew him, from his sister-in-law Edith Hanke, niece Coriena Hanke, nephew Kenneth Hanke, to his sister Carol and her husband Bob.
Dick's journey through life serves as a poignant reminder of the beauty found in connection, laughter, and love. In our memories, he will remain a joyful spirit, a devoted family member, and a lasting beacon of happiness amidst the tides of time.
