Merle Booras

Merle “Smaragdi” Booras (Stavrakis) passed away peacefully in her daughter’s home in Portland, Oregon, on October 18, 2023 surrounded by her family. She is survived by her daughter Niki Booras, granddaughter Nicole Peschka (Brian), grandson Andrew Bennett (Danielle), and four great grandchildren Nicholas, Katie, Ellie, and Mia. She was preceded in death by her eldest daughter Kathy Bennett and her beloved husband George Booras.

She was born on October 24, 1937 in Athens, Greece, to Ioannis and Kalliopi Stavrakis. She was one of four children which included her older brother Peter, younger sister Jane, and younger brother Jim. After World War II, she and her family emigrated to the United States through Ellis Island, New York, in 1951 at the age of fourteen aboard the Nea Hellas. After arriving in Portland, Oregon, she graduated from Cleveland High School and married George Booras in 1955. George’s career led them to Corvallis, Oregon, in 1962 where they continued to raise their family until their return to Portland in 1980.

Merle was known for her love of knowledge, optimistic attitude, and caring heart towards others. She fervently loved her family and served as a powerful example to her two daughters. Her voice of wisdom and insightful advice was a beacon for her family.  As a member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, she held her faith near to her heart and was always ready to share it. Her vibrant conversations, infectious laughter, and charming personality will be missed by all those who knew her. May her memory be eternal.
