Mark Jack Hyman, 83, of Portland, Oregon, passed away peacefully at his home on April 12, 2026, surrounded by his family.
Mark was born on September 23, 1942, in Boston, Massachusetts, to Sidney and Bertha (Carlin) Hyman. At a young age, he moved with his family to Portland, where he would spend the rest of his life. He attended Kennedy and Harvey Scott grade schools and graduated from Madison High School in June 1960.
Mark was a dedicated pharmacist, as well as a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He began working at Fairley’s Pharmacy in 1959 while still in high school and continued there throughout his college years as he pursued his degree in pharmacy. He graduated from Oregon State University School of Pharmacy in June 1965. In 1974, Mark became a partner at Fairley’s Pharmacy with Don Kennedy. They remained partners until Don’s retirement in 1990, after which Mark continued as sole owner until his own retirement in 2003. His remarkable 44-year career in pharmacy reflected his commitment to serving his community.
In retirement, Mark and his wife Karen embraced their love of travel, exploring much of Europe, Japan, and the Caribbean. One of their most cherished experiences was celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in Turks and Caicos, surrounded by nearly their entire family.
Mark had many passions and hobbies. He was an avid basketball player, continuing to play weekly with friends until the age of 75, often bringing along his grandson to join the “old guys.” In his younger years, he was a boxer and later enjoyed demonstrating his speed bag skills in his garage—much to the delight of his grandchildren and any neighbors passing by. Even at age 80, he proudly recorded a video of himself working the speed bag.
He was also a devoted fan of Oregon State University athletics and the Portland Trail Blazers, attending games regularly and faithfully recording them to watch later—always skipping the commercials. Woodworking was another of Mark’s talents; he demonstrated his craftsmanship by remodeling his upstairs bathroom, handcrafting and installing all the cabinetry himself. With the help of a neighbor, he even built a handmade ukulele.
Mark was always ready to lend a hand. Whether it was fixing something, tackling a project, or solving a problem, he was known for his generosity, resourcefulness, and willingness to help others.
He is survived by his wife and high school sweetheart, Karen, with whom he shared 64 wonderful years of marriage; his foster daughter, Linda; his sons, Scott (J.J.) and Gregg (Lynda); his brother, Henry; his grandchildren, Ryan, Kim (Chris), Sydney, Matthew, Rebekah, Adam, Olivia, and Jackson; and his great-grandchildren, Milan, Isaac, and Theo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his older brother, Godfrey; and his son, Craig.
A celebration of Mark’s life will be held on Saturday, June 13, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Colwood Golf Course.
