James T. Hubler

September 11, 1943 — July 10, 2019

Jim Hubler died peacefully in his home on July 10, 2019 at the age of 75.  While facing physical challenges in recent years, his mind and natural wit remained sharp.

Born in Portland, Oregon, on September 11, 1943 to Elmer M. and Katherine A. (McGinty) Hubler.  As a true Portlander and Catholic, he attended All Saints Grade School and graduated from Central Catholic High School.  He attended University of Portland for his Freshman year of college where he met the love of his life, Marcia S. McCabe.  They were married in 1965 and remained married for over 54 years. He is survived by his wife, Marcia, and three children, Lisa (Potekev), Mark, and Nick.  He also raised his niece, Tawnia and nephew, Adam.

After his freshman year, he transferred to Portland State University where he earned a Bachelor of Applied Science (Engineering).  He then Graduated cum laude J.D.  from Lewis and Clark College in 1972.  He attended the advanced management program, Harvard School of Business in 1980.

As a native Oregonian, Jim traveled every corner of the state.  He and his wife shared a particular fondness for the Oregon Coast.

He started his career working for Hyster Corporation in the engineering department.  He then worked in private practice for Tooze, Kerr, Marshall, & Shenker, in Portland. In 1973, after applying for a blind ad in the Oregonian, he was hired as the first General Counsel, or in-house counsel for   Consolidated Freightways, which would later become Freightliner Corporation.  Through his demonstrated understanding of business and aptitude for the art of complex negotiations, his responsibilities grew and title expanded to include Senior Vice President Industrial Relations, General Counsel and Secretary.  He remained at Freightliner for over 27 years, until his retirement in 2002. After retirement, he and his wife enjoyed traveling extensively, both domestically and internationally.

Jim was an avid supporter of the community by serving on the advisory boards of Portland State University, School of Engineering and Lewis and Clark Law School.  He also supported various catholic charities.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be sent to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital Foundation.

There will be a Rosary starting at 10:30am followed by Mass at The Madeleine Church on Friday, July 19, 2019.
