Hester "Sumi" Sumiko Migaki

Hester “Sumi” Sumiko Migaki of Portland, Oregon passed away peacefully at home on March 21, 2024.

She was born on February 24, 1928, in Parkdale, Oregon.  In 1934, when Sumi was approximately 6 years of age she, along with her two younger sisters (Irene and Marge) and younger brother (Henry) were sent to Okayama, Japan to be raised by her paternal aunt and uncle as her mother had passed away. She returned to the United States at the age of 21.

Sumi married Dick Migaki on November 16, 1952, and together they raised three children (Ken, Akemi, and Susumu) in NE Portland.

A master cook of Japanese cuisine, Sumi’s New Year’s Day dinners were the best.

She loved dogs and would always have to stop and say hi to any dog that was nearby.

Sumi was preceded in death by her brothers Casey, George and Henry Soga and sisters Rose Aoki, Irene Doioka and Marge Flier.  Along with her children, she is survived by her grandsons (Dane, Blake and Reed), son-in-law Eric Johnson and his children and grandchildren.

At Sumi’s request a private service will be held.  The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Oregon Humane Society in her memory.
