Henry “Mac” McDowell was born on June 21, 1938, in Linden, Texas, and passed away peacefully on June 24, 2025, in Portland, Oregon, surrounded by his loving family.
Henry was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. His life was a testament to hard work, kindness, and devotion to those he loved.
He graduated from Fairview High School in 1957 with high honors in music, a talent and passion that remained close to his heart. After high school, Henry relocated to Portland, Oregon, where he began a long and proud career as a longshoreman. Throughout the decades, he earned the respect and admiration of his colleagues for his dedication, reliability, and leadership.
Mac found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He loved rising early to enjoy a cup of coffee while either agreeing with CNN or debating with FOX News. He loved to travel and read his newspaper, always eager to stay informed and explore new places. During the quiet hours of the day, he enjoyed sitting on the porch watching hummingbirds fly by, happily sipping sugar water. He found peace working in his yard, especially when planting flowers and tending to his garden. And he never passed up a slice of his favorite red velvet cake from Sammy’s Cheesecake of Atlanta, Georgia. Always ready with a warm smile, a helping hand, or words of encouragement, Henry’s generosity, sense of humor, and quiet strength left a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Henry is survived by his devoted daughter, Deborah Raines; his cherished grandchildren; his sister, Alma Jean Reese; his nieces, Debra Rodgers, Lynn West, and Robbie West; his nephews, Kenny West, Duane Rodgers, and Alton McDowell; his special companion, Valerie McCollum; and a host of other relatives and special friends who will forever cherish his memory.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Lee and Estella McDowell; his wife, Bettie Lou Overton McDowell; his parents, Roxie Fae Ward and stepfather Robert George Ward; his sons, Terry Wayne Overton and Ricky Overton; and his sister, Fayrine West.
Henry’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
