Harold L. Hay

July 12, 1933 — September 16, 2018

Harold “Hal” L. Hay was born in Newport, Oregon to Edgar and Gladys Hay. The Family moved to Tillamook for one year then settled in Southeast Portland in early 1940’s.  He attended Benson and Franklin High Schools. In November of 1950 he married his high school sweetheart, Margaret Ann Dunaway. They started a family in 1951. Harold worked for Meier and Frank, Southern Pacific Railroad and American Pipe. After studying engineering at Portland State University, he went to work for Columbia Steel Casting Company in North Portland in 1961 where he served 38 years as a Draftsman, Product Engineer and Product Engineering Manager specializing in aggregate and mining castings. Harold and Margaret moved to Northeast Portland by Grant Park to raise their family and lived in the same house for 50 years while making many friends in Northeast Portland.  He retired in 1999 to spend more time with his wife Margaret.

Harold enjoyed spending time with family and friends at their cabin on Mt. Hood and had many hobbies, including being a handy-man around their Northeast house on home remodels and car and boat projects. He enjoyed golfing, skiing and model trains. Harold was active in the Scottish clubs the Clan Macleay and St. Andrews Society.  In 1989, when he and Margaret purchased a Cortez Motor Home, they joined the Cortez Motor Home Club and would spend many weekends taking trips in their motor home.  He was also active in the Grant Park Church. In his later years, he enjoyed walks with his dog(s) and visiting with neighbors. Harold was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret, son Patrick and Sister Patricia. Harold is survived by his brothers Eddy and Bobby Hay and sons Hal and Ian Hay, four grandchildren -  Andrew, Sarah, Colin and Annabelle and two great grandchildren, Megan and Thomas.

A memorial service will be held at Grant Park Church on Friday, November 2 at 11am. Memorial contributions can be made to the Oregon Humane Society,
