Emma Jean Cooksey was born on March 27, 1928 to Drew Cooksey and Elizabeth Penix in Fordyce, Arkansas. She was baptized at an early age in Mt. Aria Methodist Church. She attended Dallas County Training School in Fordyce and graduated with honors in 1947. Shortly after she and her best friend Juanita headed for California. She lived with her favorite uncle in California until she gained employment. Later she went to Seattle where her sister Mildred lived. When her sister left Seattle, she came to Portland where she met and married Sam Scott. Jean was a licensed beautician and also held various other jobs before retiring from Oeco.
She always preferred to be called Jean because she never liked “Emma”. Jean was a gracious and generous person, always willing to help others. Jean loved beautiful clothes. She wore her clothes in a model-like fashion. She and her husband made a stunning couple when out at any function. Jean was a long time member of Ainsworth United Church of Christ where she sung in the choir for a period of time, and was a member of the usher board for many years. Jean was also a very good cook. She was known for her pound cake. One of her cakes was sold for $200 at a fundraiser for the church. She often asked about her friends at church when she was no longer able to attend and many of them went to visit her.
Jean had many friends, she also was a Trail Blazer fan. She also loved to watch game shows on TV. She enjoyed visits from former police chief “Chuck” Lovell and his wife. Chuck always checked on her for the past 20 years.
Jeans legacy continues through her sons Jackie Scott (Cassandra), Kenneth Scott, Sr. (Linda). Grandchildren; Danielle Scott, Jermy Scott, Rene Hale, Andre Scott, Sean Scott, Sr., Kenneth Scott, Jr. Brothers; George Thrower, Otis Thrower, and Charles Cooksey. The Scott, Thrower and Hinton families wish to acknowledge with appreciation of the many expressions of love and kindness and support during this time of bereavement.
