Elizabeth Ann Dodd
March 18, 1932 - July 25, 2023
Elizabeth Ann "Betty" Dodd passed away peacefully at her home Tuesday, July 25, 2023, at the age of 91.
Betty was born in Roseburg, Ore., March 18, 1932. Her family moved when she was 2 to Portland, Ore., and she resided most of her life in the Rose City neighborhood.
Betty attended Rose City Elementary where her mother taught, Grant High School and Oregon State University. In 1951 she attended a fraternity party at the Phi Gamma Delta (FIJI) house at Oregon State. The party began with the boys throwing one shoe into a pile and the girls chose one to determine who they would dance with. Betty pulled Richard "Dick" Dodd's shoe and they proceeded to dance in life for over 65 beautiful years together.
Betty and family were very active on Mount Hood. While her husband Dick was working as a ski instructor and with Mountain Rescue, she ran point on her five children who skied and ski raced. She and Dick started the first Cross Country School on Mt. Hood and she spent many years officiating (timing and calculating) for downhill ski races in Oregon, Washington and Idaho. She was also instrumental in developing the high school ski racing program in Oregon. She put in countless hours volunteering on the mountain and in 1998 she was awarded the honor of being crowned King Winter. King Winter is an honor that is given to the person who has given the most to the mountain.
Betty loved her family fiercely. Family was everything to her and holidays were warm and full of family and tradition. She saw her boys through baseball, keeping score and continued to attend games with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was known for "showing up" and the best days were spent rooting on her family. She was an active member of her church and spent many years fundraising and being on the board. She also ran the Daybreak program at her church which served meals, housed and offered support to at risk families.
Betty enjoyed her book groups and playing Bridge with a group that lasted over 50 years. She practiced Tai Chi and taught Sunday School for 11 years. She was accepting of all people and embraced diversity. She loved to cook and entertain and share recipes with people.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Dick; and she is survived by her daughter, Julie Rasmussen (Dave Rasmussen), Jim Dodd (Bess Dodd), Tom Dodd (Kim Dodd), David Dodd (Sara Dodd) and Peter Dodd (Meg Spillman). She had 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. We want to thank "Our Angel" Iryna who took care of her in her final days.
A service will be held at 3 p.m., Friday, Aug. 11, 2023, at the Rose City Park United Methodist Church where Betty was a member for 89 of her 91 years. Donations may be made to Rose City Park United Methodist Church. Betty will be interred at Rose City Cemetery and Funeral Home alongside her husband Dick.
