Dorothy Raye Carter, a beloved figure in her community and an exceptional caregiver, passed away on January 21, 2026, in Portland, Oregon. Born on March 30, 1934, in Shreveport, Louisiana, Dorothy lived a vibrant life dedicated to serving others and uplifting those around her.
Dorothy pursued her passion for nursing, completing her education at Portland Community College and subsequently embarking on a fulfilling career. She worked as a nurse for Legacy Health System at Emanuel Hospital for six years and devoted an impressive 36 years to Good Sam Hospital as a phlebotomist. Throughout her career, she was known not just for her skill, but for her warm demeanor and compassion for all her patients.
In addition to her professional achievements, Dorothy was a proud single mother who raised six children, an accomplishment that stands as a testament to her incredible strength and resilience. She demonstrated a willpower to overcome the odds, and her unwavering love for mankind shone brightly in everything she did. As a trainer for future phlebotomists and a mentor to the children of family and friends, her influence extended far beyond her own family.
Dorothy's personality was as vibrant as her career; she loved to dance, sing, play cards, and engage in lively games of dominoes. She was also a talented pitcher on a softball team, showcasing her energetic spirit. Dorothy was also a story teller. A devoted member of Piedmont Church of Christ, Dorothy found joy and community through her faith.
In her personal life, Dorothy was married to Leon Sanders in May 1957, and together they shared 15 years. She enjoyed living in various states, including New York, Texas, Louisiana, and California, each place adding to the rich tapestry of her life.
Her memory will live on through her loving family: her daughters, Terry Pennywell and Twiquilla Guy (Harrison); her sons, Russell Clay, Gregory Clay, Quinton Sanders, and Barry Sanders; and her extensive lineage, which includes seventeen grandchildren, thirty-four great-grandchildren, and thirteen great-great-grandchildren, brother Willie Hunter and sister, Margaret Carter. In addition, she leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, and friends who will cherish the countless memories they created together.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her father, Sam Carter; her mother, Emma Carter; her sisters, Ann Taylor, Gussie Wright, Olivia Davis, and Leola Thomas; and her brothers, Sam Carter and James R. Carter.
As those she leaves behind gather to celebrate her remarkable life, they will remember her infectious charisma and her passion for advocating for the underdog. Dorothy Raye Carter's legacy is one of kindness, strength, and an enduring love for her family and community.
The family wishes to thank Piedmont Church of Christ, Dr. Ben Ly, Legacy Emanuel Medical Center and Staff, the many who had a hand in her care. We wish to thank the Urban League and the Amedisys Home Healthcare team.
