Beatrice White (Matlock), affectionately known as “Bea”, “Ms. Bea”, or “Aunt Bea”, passed away
peacefully at the age of 102. Born on February 23, 1923, in Thornton, Arkansas to Amy O.
Matlock and Willie Smith. After graduating high school, Beatrice moved to Oregon to work for
the shipyard. She built a life rooted in hard work, deep love for the outdoors, gardening, and
caring for the neighborhood cats. As the eldest of three siblings, Beatrice took on a leadership
role, guiding her family with strength and independence and later bringing both of her siblings to
Oregon.
She was a dedicated worker, where her determination and commitment to excellence became
defining aspects of her character. She was also a fighter, tackling life with an unwavering sense
of independence and a no-nonsense attitude. Known for her sharp wit and straightforward
nature. Beatrice never hesitated to speak her mind, earning the admiration of all who knew her.
Beatrice enjoyed long walks through the streets of Northeast Portland, often with her cart in tow
to pick up groceries and cat food, or to stop by the Fish and Loaves center on MLK. In her spare
time, she also gave back to the community by volunteering at various food banks. She was
always ready to lend a helping hand while remaining steadfast in her own beliefs. Her resilience
and fierce independence were an aspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Her sense of humor never failed to brighten the room. She had a rare ability to make people
laugh and share her wisdom with others in a way that only she could. Her strength and her
commitment to living life on her own terms will be remembered as a guiding light for all who
crossed her path.
Beatrice was preceded in death by her mother, Amy Matlock, her father, Willie Smith and her
sisters, Olivee Matlock and Veona Monroe. She leaves behind a cherished legacy and is
survived by a host of nieces and nephews who forever carry her memory in our hearts.
