Bao Pham

January 10, 1946 — April 27, 2025

Portland

Bao Pham was born on January 10th, 1946, in Ninh Cuong, Bui Chu province, Vietnam.  He was raised in a devout Catholic family.  Parents: Father: Hien Van Pham, Mother: Cay Thi Nguyen.  Siblings: older sister, Lan Thi Pham, deceased in North Vietnam, younger sister: Dao Thi Pham, Catholic nun/religious sister with lifelong commitment at the convent of Lovers of the Holy Cross of Bui Mon, Vietnam.

He migrated to Saigon when he was 10 years-old in 1954.  He lived with his uncle and had to learn how to grow up fast without his parents.  To make ends meet, he had to do odd jobs to earn some extra money to get food to the table in order to help his uncle and his family such as working on rice patty, duck herding, selling newspapers and after school tutoring.  There was time he was raised in the orphanage and later by a fostered family in Saigon since his uncle and his family were no longer able to support him.  He finished his baccalaureate, received B.S. Pharmacy degree and became a licensed pharmacist in 1970.  He met his wife, Lien Nguyen from Tam Ha, Thu Duc District and married her in 1972.  He then was drafted to join the Army Medical Corps of the Republic of South Vietnam as a first lieutenant pharmacist.  Together, Lien and he had two children in which the eldest son is Young Pham and the youngest son is Phuoc Thien Pham.  After 1975, he was put in a reeducation camp/hard labor camp by the Vietnamese communist regime for almost three years.  He was released and sent to work at the Go Vap Hospital in Go Vap District and later became the head of the hospital medical laboratory and devoted some of his time at the hospital teaching nurses in the early 80's until he emigrated to the United States in the year 2000.  He first lived in Indianapolis, IN then moved to Houston, TX and worked for a few months before moving to Oregon where he finally settled in NE of Portland since early 2000's.  He then went back to school and worked as a licensed pharmacy technician at Fred Meyer pharmacies, NE of Portland until he was retired during COVID 2020.  In his spare time, he loved doing home improvements and has spent over the last 20 years to finish numerous home improvement projects for his house.  He really missed doing house projects as he became seriously ill and could not move much in the last few years of his life.  He passed away at home while under a short hospice care, on Sunday afternoon April 27th, 2025.

Bao is a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather.  All of his life, he has always worked hard to take care of his family.  He is a devout Catholic and is a member of Our Lady of Lavang Parish, Portland, OR.  He is survived by his wife, Lien Nguyen, his two sons, Young Pham and Phuoc Thien Pham, their wives and his two grandsons, Benjamin Pham and Andrew Pham respectively.  Rise with the Lord, we pray for His Divine Mercy for Bao Pham!
