Alice Turowski (b. 3/3/1928, d. 8/6/2021) was an adventurer, teacher, gardener, runner, sister, daughter, cousin, and friend. She was born and raised on the corner- of N. Missouri & Beech, residing in her family home with . the original hardwood floors her father laid down almost a century ago. Her magnificent garden boasted tulips she mailed to her mother from Amsterdam decades ago, well loved rose bushes, countless additional flowers and plants, and remains the envy of the neighborhood.
Alice had a vibrant career as an educator teaching elementary, middle school, and special needs classes at numerous Portland schools before retiring in 1988. She also lived abroad teaching in Germany from 1958-62, initiating a love of travel and adventure that lasted the rest of her life. Her adventures were extensive. She made it out of East Berlin as the wall was being built, navigated Communist Poland, and spent a night sleeping in Italy crammed in her Borgward with her brother, Edmund. Alice invested herself in her passions, whether that meant learning German & Polish, exploring genealogy, running races into her late 70's, developing her calligraphy skills (which were amazing), gardening, or just being an incredible sister & friend. There is no way to fully sum up this remarkable person in a few paragraphs, but having Alice in our lives was truly a gift. Her smile, laugh, and uncompromising approach to life has inspired us all. She will be loved, she will be missed, and she will be celebrated.
Alice is survived by her brother Edmund Turowski, and her cousin Anna Hoffelner, as well as countless friends. She was preceded in death by her mother & father Marie & Joseph Turowski, and her sister Bernice Newcomb.
