Hugh Hunter, Jr

October 2, 1946 — August 14, 2016

A Celebration of Life gathering will be held at 2pm on Thursday, September 1st at Rose City Funeral Home Chapel on 5625 NE Fremont Street in honor of Hugh Hunter. Hugh passed away in Portland, Oregon on August 14, 2016. He was 69 years old.

Hugh was born October 2, 1946 in Dallas, Texas. He was the 3rd of 6 children, and the only son born to father Hugh Hunter, Sr. and mother Jessie Mae Franklin. Hugh moved several times during his childhood as they were a military family, and he attended elementary and high school in Germany.

Hugh moved to Portland, Oregon in the winter of 1971. It was that New Year’s Eve that he met his wife Christine Hunter. They were instantly inseparable, and married June 30,1972. They raised five children together.

Hugh was the owner and operator of two businesses in his lifetime. Originally, Hugh and Christine founded a printing business with a local storefront on SE Foster Road. However, Hugh always had a passion for darts and gaming, and the printing business eventually evolved into what became known as Softipper Darts. The storefront on SE Foster Road became a shop dedicated to anything and everything a dart player could desire. Hugh and Christine hosted large local dart tournaments, and continued to expand on the business over time. They continued to add in new electronic dartboards, gaming machines, and internet jukeboxes that were located in many businesses throughout the Portland metropolitan area. Hugh worked tirelessly operating and maintaining his vending and gaming business up until his passing.

In his spare time, Hugh had a love for camping in his motor home.  Hugh guided his family through many trips along the west coast, creating great memories that lasted a life-time.

Anyone who knew Hugh could also tell you that he was the #1 fan of the Dallas Cowboys.  He would faithfully watch every game they played on the home theater system that he so diligently built.

Hugh was a man of few words, but everybody could see his kind spirit and felt his presence. He was incredibly hard-working, never complained, and always looked at the bright side of whatever situation was thrown his way. He will be dearly missed.

Hugh is survived by his wife of forty-four years, Christine Hunter, children; Andrew McDougald, Demetria McDougald, Jason Hunter, Trelane Hunter and Lemond Hunter, Seven grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren, siblings; Ola Hunter, Brenda Burgess, Marchelle Thompson & Lisa Williams.  He is predeceased by his sister Joan Jackson.
