David Piel

October 29, 1927 — June 21, 2017

David Piel, 89, a lifelong resident of Portland, passed away on June 21, 2017 after a brief illness. Dave was born October 29, 1927 to Jacob and Kathrine Piel.  He was the second youngest of ten children. He was drafted and served two years with the US Army from 1950 to 1952. Dave worked for the same company for 49 years as a Packaging Design Engineer where he helped create packaging for the original McDonald's Happy Meal, Nordstrom's, Blitz-Weinhard Brewing Co., and Teddy Ruxpin. He was a Scout Master and leader for his sons' Scout troops and also coached his sons in Little League baseball. Dave loved to travel and camp, first with this family as his children were growing up, and later in retirement with his wife, and sometimes even with the entire family. He had traveled to most of the 50 states and many places in Europe and Central America.  He enjoyed being "Mr. Fix-it" around his house, and took great pleasure in the home he provided for his family. Dave was an active member of his church and volunteered at the Portland Center Stage.

Dave was a very successful man, father, husband, and grandfather. His family was the most important part of his life. He made sure his wife and children were taken care of and loved every day of their lives.

He is proceeded in death by his parents, nine brothers and sisters, and son Eric William Piel.  He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Shirley, his two sons Kevin (Tammy), Rian (Robyn) and daughter-in-law Robbie, and his three beloved grandchildren Megan, Brandon and Justin.
