Judy Mae Phillips was born July 20, 1956 to Reverend Hudie Phillips, Sr. and Julia Nell Phillips, in Water Valley, Mississippi, where she lived until she was 14 years old when the family relocated to Portland, Oregon.

Judy was known as “Pretty Eyes” by most of her friends. Judy graduated from Adams High School and went on to complete her education as a Certified Nurses Aid. In that capacity, she assisted lots of elderly people in nursing homes. Judy was the eldest of eleven children. Judy was the one to help raise the kids while mom and dad worked. When Judy watched us, we hardly ever got into trouble. She would always see trouble and mom and dad coming for miles! She would say “y’all better clean the house”. And as soon as we were done, sure enough, mom and dad walked through the door!  Judy was a very loving and kind person, but not quiet AT ALL! She was that one to let you know if you rubbed her wrong. But no matter what the issue was, she would still be Judy loud and full of love.  Judy would always acknowledge her family no matter where she saw them. Judy would say “That’s my brother or sister. Leave them alone.” She didn’t care what the issue was, she would always let you know you were her family or friend. Every time you would see Judy she would always say her famous words “That’s my family/friend. Don’t mess with him or her”. Judy was the one to take care of her oldest brother, Hudie Phillips, Jr. in his last days. She didn’t care what he wanted or needed, she would try and make it happen. After his passing Judy took it really hard, but that didn’t stop her. She picked herself up and continued where she left off with mom every day.  Even though Judy was ill, she got up every morning and made mom breakfast and coffee, and watched TV. Judy and mom watched the same shows every day, same time – even the day of her last breath.

Proceeding Judy in death is her father, Hudie Phillips, Sr., grandmother Elnora Wright and her brother, Hudie Phillips, Jr.
