Arthur Brown Jr.March 22, 1925 ~ June 5, 2017 (age 92)
Arthur “Fred” Brown Jr., was born to Alice and Arthur Brown Sr. on March 22, 1925 in Atlas, Texas. He was the fourth sibling born out of ten; eight boys and two girls. Fred attended Gibbons High School and was on both the football and basketball teams.
After graduation, at the age of 18 he decided to join the U.S. Army. This is where Fred was first introduced to cooking for the masses. He did not know that his love for cooking would later result in a long career as a chef at various restaurants including the River Queen and Henry Thiele’s.
In 1948, he met the love of his life, Julia Alexander and in 1953, they elected to make the journey north to Portland, Oregon where they made their home until Julia’s passing in 2008.
Fred was affectionately known as “Granddaddy” not only to all his grandchildren but to many others. He was an active member of the Missionary Baptist Church, where he started a breakfast program for the children. He also willingly took on the responsibility for the maintenance of the church.
He loved to travel, garden and cook. Anyone that knew Fred had the pleasure of enjoying his wonderful sense of humor which always made him the life of any social event he attended.
Fred is survived by his sister Dora Ann Brown, of Omaha, Nebraska. Countless Grandchildren, Great-Grandchildren, Great-Great Grandchildren, Nephews, Nieces, Cousins and Friends who will all miss him very much.
